Let it never go unsaid, that The False Creek Yacht club is a spectacular venue to host an Album release party. That was certainly true last night when Jay Gavin & the Tired Sunday choir put on a truly incredible night.
The extraordinarily talented Cassidy Waring kicked the night off on ukulele and then her trademark auto Harp accompanied by Sam Balson on electric guitar. Cassidy left the audience feeling the way she always does, dowsed in heavy sentiments of love, loss and life’s subtle hauntings. She perfectly primed us for the next act of the evening.
Sam Balson, it’s not often you witness a performer who is truly gifted on guitar, while being an exceptional songwriter. The man has killer lines for days. Garnished perfectly by an incredible backing band.
Finally, Jay Gavin & the Tired Sunday choir completed the night. The audience were a near dozen beers in. Jay's music was perfect timing. From the get-go Jay had us. We had Sam Balson on lead guitar too for the performance, we also had Cassidy waring on backing vocals too for the entire set. This certainly was the main course.
Jay immediately found the human in all of us. Told us stories we’ve all lived and handed those stories back to us like an ice cold beer. We truly came together as one in the light of his songwriting. We sailed to the end of the show in an embrace, feeling that every one of us in this room is but a broken heart and an ice cold beer away from a country song of our own. Jay has this unparalleled ability to write a song that is simultaneously hilarious and heartbreaking. He is a true blue musician with relentless talent. The evening was a celebration of his album release for Boat on a Whale. It is a fantastic record that showcases his clever songwriting and impossibly skilled band. Jay Gavin and the Tired Sunday Choir will perform across Vancouver throughout April. Get a chance to witness their carnivals of authentic sound any chance you get.
